About Us
AATL is an Industry-focused research center for bridging engineering gaps, advanced learning and training, having specialized Labs to support research, development & commercialization of broad technology segments such as Mechanical Joining, Adhesive Bonding, and Welding / Fusion combined with Design Engineering and Process Engineering capabilities. The emphasis is to move away from isolated pockets of expertise within various organizations to a community-focused enabling structure with a clear mandate and visibility. The objective is to Synergize Industry & Academia to develop a collaborative approach to problem-solving, create a repository of information that will aid in the easy adoption of advanced joining technologies, quickly troubleshoot joining-related issues, validate new technologies, certify new processes and tools, and equipment for fitness for use.
Leadership Team
Satish Anantharaman Director (Outreach)
Satish Anantharaman is a seasoned executive, technologist, and investor with over 20 years of global leadership experience across North America, Europe, and Asia. A Mechanical Engineer by training, Satish earned his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University and an MBA from Rutgers Business School’s international program across Newark, Beijing, Shanghai, and Singapore. Satish is widely recognised for his deep expertise in advanced assembly technologies, having led innovation efforts at global companies including Robert Bosch, Dukane, and Stanley Black & Decker. His work spans the development and commercialisation of cutting-edge techniques in adhesive bonding, fusion, ultrasonic and laser welding, and mechanical joining—core enablers for next-generation products in electric mobility, medical devices, and high-reliability components. He has been granted US and Globalpatents and has several publications in the areas of Joining & Accelerated testing.
He currently serves as a Director of Outreach at Advanced Assembly Technology Labs(AATL), hosted at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), focusing on the development and scaling of state-of-the-art joining technologies for high-performance applications.
Additionally, as the Director of ISAT Solutions & Gaaia3 Technologies & Ventures, Satish combines his technical depth with strategic investment acumen, incubating and accelerating ventures in MedTech, CleanTech, FinTech, IoT, and Analytics. His goal: to back breakthrough technologies and build scalable businesses that define the next generation of industrial innovation.
Prof. D. Roy Mahapatra Director (R&D)
Dr. Roy Mahapatra is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering with over 20 years of experience in research, teaching, and industry consulting in the fields of aerospace, mechanical, biosystems, and energy systems engineering. His scientific and technical domain expertise encompasses engineering mechanics, modeling and simulation, materials, structures, and systems design and development, advanced testing and diagnostics, systems health monitoring, and life-cycle design engineering. He brings rich experiences in multi-disciplinary engineering and technology development, application-related conceptualization, development, process engineering, and training.
He obtained his undergraduate engineering degree from Jadavpur University in 1998 and his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science in 2004. He was elected as a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering in 2019. He has served in various national and international technical committees as a domain expert and member.
Besides regular academic and research activities, leading a research lab group at IISc Bangalore, his involvement at AATL includes developing and managing research and development activities, coordinating collaborative projects, various program development bridging the gaps between academia and industry, advancing process engineering innovation, and building skill & training capacity in deep-tech areas, fostering an innovation ecosystem.
